O’Brien Waste Recycling Solutions (a trading name of Biffa Waste Services Limited) acknowledge the importance of health and safety, giving it the greatest priority in relation to our corporate governance structure.

We understand the key to successful health and safety management requires an effective policy, organisation and arrangements. To maintain that commitment we continuously measure, monitor and revise our health and safety management system.

Our commitment is clearly defined within our health and safety policy statement, which demonstrates the allocation of adequate financial and staffing resources to meet the needs of the company. It also details roles and responsibilities of our staff as well as our commitment to consult with the workforce on health and safety related subjects. This policy is reviewed on a minimum of an annual basis.

Investment in training

We set health and safety KPIs which allow us to continually improve on our health and safety performance and move the company towards its overall goal of ‘zero harm’.

O’Brien identifies the need to protect it’s workforce and any persons affected by our work activities against all types of hazards, including:

  • Physical
  • Chemical
  • Biological
  • Ergonomic
  • Psychological

Each activity we undertake is fully risk-assessed and has a safe system of work created prior to it commencing. This process mitigates all applicable hazards to an acceptable level using the hierarchy of control. Throughout the assessment of an activity, the workforce carrying out the role are actively involved and consulted with. Upon completion the risk assessment is made available to all persons who may be affected by the work activity. In addition occupational health surveillance is in place for all staff exposed to potential health hazards.

All accidents, incidents and near misses are fully investigated for both immediate and root causes. Each investigation identifies control measures to be implemented in order to prevent re-occurrence. Investigation reports are then communicated throughout the organisation in an effort to promote a ‘lessons learned’ culture. When carrying out the investigation we include the workforce and often look to them for advice and reasons why, which may not be immediately apparent.
